Great meal from start to finish. We started with a Moscow Mule and Bluberry Festival cocktail and complimentary bread with olive oil. Our server was prompt and very accommodating. Our meals were caeser salad, Mussel and Clam linguine, and Ravioli Prima Vera, both were tonight's specials, cooked perfectly and delicious. This restaurant is in the remodeled historic Bass Shoe manufacturing building which was what the town of Wilton is known for. We dined on the back deck which is on the river. They reccomend reservations for inside dining, however we thoroughly enjoyed the Al Fresco dining in perfect weather. A charming place. Great food reasonably priced. Kudos to staff and chef. Well done! We will be back.
Overview
Calzolaio Pasta Co on 284 Main St, Wilton, ME 04294, United States, is one of those rare spots where you walk in and instantly feel like you’ve discovered a hidden gem. From the moment I stepped through the door, the aroma of fresh pasta and rich sauces hit me like a warm embrace. The ambiance is cozy but vibrant, with rustic wooden tables and soft lighting that make it perfect for a casual dinner or a relaxed lunch.
What sets this diner apart is the dedication to authentic Italian flavors while still experimenting with unique, modern twists. I remember trying their hand-rolled pappardelle with a slow-cooked beef ragu-a dish that reminded me of meals I had in small trattorias during my travels in Tuscany. Each bite was tender, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. Even the simplest pasta dishes, like the classic spaghetti aglio e olio, show a careful attention to ingredient quality and preparation technique. It’s clear that the chefs at Calzolaio Pasta Co have honed their craft over years of experience, combining traditional methods with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
The menu offers a wide range of choices beyond pasta, including wood-fired pizzas, fresh salads, and seasonal specials. One standout for me was the mushroom risotto. The Arborio rice was creamy yet firm, coated in a delicate, earthy mushroom sauce that tasted both comforting and luxurious. They also offer a variety of appetizers, like bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes and fresh basil, which make for perfect starters while sipping on a glass of wine from their curated selection.
Reviews from locals and visitors alike often highlight not just the food, but the warmth of the staff. It’s the kind of place where the servers remember your favorite dishes and are genuinely excited to offer recommendations. Their attentiveness adds a personal touch that elevates the dining experience, creating an inviting atmosphere that encourages repeat visits.
If you’re curious about the culinary craft behind Calzolaio Pasta Co, it’s interesting to note that studies from the Culinary Institute of America suggest that the quality of pasta dishes significantly improves when ingredients are fresh and techniques follow traditional Italian methods. For anyone exploring Wilton, Maine, the location at 284 Main St makes it accessible yet pleasantly tucked away from the busier parts of town. Parking is convenient, and the layout encourages both intimate dining experiences and group gatherings. During one visit, I watched the chefs prepare a special seafood linguine. The precision in how they seared the scallops and incorporated fresh herbs highlighted their deep expertise. That dish alone could serve as a case study in how attention to technique transforms simple ingredients into something memorable. Pairing it with a crisp local white wine created a combination that lingered in my memory long after the meal ended.
The diner’s commitment to freshness, seasonality, and flavor experimentation is mirrored in the feedback shared by food bloggers and culinary reviewers who consistently praise the balance between traditional Italian roots and creative innovation. Best gluten free hamburger and sweet potato fries in town. They also have gluten free desserts available. The peanut butter pie is to die for. Staff are super nice and some of them are actually gluten free as well so they definitely knowledgeable of it. Highly recommend it. When I have company in town this restaurants is my number one choice.
The cinnamon maple apple pie was excellent! The staff were very friendly and attentive.
It is a great place for indoor/outdoor dining. If you'd like a table inside, you'll likely want to make a reservation as it is a popular place. The food was delicious, portions were a whole plate full, and the bread and olive oil as a beginner was most welcomed. There is plenty of parking, and even two different EV charging spots.
Love Calzolaio Italian Restaurant in Wilton, Maine. They also have wonderful waitstaff, and bartenders like Lexi who served us tonight. Their specials are amazing, they have staples like their dessert rhubarb pie which is out of this world, and their sauces for their pastas are tasty and fresh. We always come when we are in town and enjoy being there. August 2025 update: we have had dinner several times this summer At Calzolaio’s and it’s still terrific. Pro tip: make a reservation because they get busy. You can sit at the bar and eat dinner though, if there’s a spot open. Service is great! Portions are large and you can easily take some home. The new rhubarb martini is delish!!! Give it a try. They also had a blueberry pie special because of the Blueberry Festival and blueberry ice cream that is amazing!! This is a must visit place! July 2023 Update: Went back, still excellent. I tried the pork dish and the pork was cooked perfectly, the sauce was sweet, the squash with sun dried tomatoes and bits of bacon was a great surprise and a light side which worked really well. I also chose the risotto as a side and it was HUGE, it had thinly sliced Parmesan cheese on top and it was so rich and so good I took most of it home. It’s a whole meal for later! They had a mixed berry pie for dessert which has a lemony crust that was to DIE for, and it was so full of black and blueberries I would reeaaally recommend that as a finishing touch to any meal there. Morgan was our server and she was terrific! We will be back again of course! Update June 2023: We went back again and had Richard as our server, he is fabulous, you can ask for him. We also had the seafood sautée which was soooo delish and the eggplant fries for an appetizer which were a little salty but very tasty. I had a nice cocktail called the basil rathbone which was interesting and STRONG, and my husband had the pickle Rick which he enjoyed very much.
What a great dinner in a cozy atmosphere. The chef (Italian from NY) made the most delicious meal from starter, main course and a light Tiramisu for dessert. We had a really nice server. Seth, was chatty and attentive without being overbearing. He made some great recommendations (including ‘you can’t go wrong with the special’) and the fact that we could eat the orchids to clean our palette. We were there last minute on a Monday evening and it was busy - so if you are thinking of going on a weekend probably good idea to call ahead for a reservation. A superb meal and HIGHLY recommend it!!!
This is by far the best Italian meal I've had in a long time. The food was excellent, the staff were friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was great. We always look for new and friendly places to meet and enjoy a gathering of friends and family and this place will definitely be a redo.
From the moment we sat down our waitress was fantastic. She made multiple suggestions, and was very attentive from start to finish. The food was outstanding and the portions were perfect. If I could give this restaurant a higher mark I would. I highly recommend if you like authentic Italian cuisine.
